Dylan Ramsey named to U of Dubuque Dean's List

The University of Dubuque congratulates the Dylan Ramsey of Urbana for being appointed to the Fall Semester 2013 Academic Dean's List. To be named to the dean's list, a student must earn a grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale for that semester. The University of Dubuque, founded in 1852, is a private, coeducational, professional University with a focus in the liberal arts.

FFA members enjoy Holiday Party

Ethan Henry bowls at the 2014 VS FFA Holiday Party. On Friday January 17, 2014, the Vinton-Shellsburg FFA Chapter had its annual Holiday Party. This party is done every year in January as a way to celebrate and say thanks to the members for selling fruit. This year we had a huge turnout of members, and took up nine lanes bowling at Berry’s Lanes. After bowling, the members went over and had supper at Pizza Hut.

J'Nae Rempfer awarded degree from Concordia University

Undergraduate and graduate degrees were awarded to 110 students in December 2013 at Concordia University, Nebraska in Seward. "This strong group of December graduates will undoubtedly make a great impact on their church, workplace and community, and we wish them many blessings as they pursue their future endeavors," said Concordia President Brian Friedrich.

State Fair Award to Recognize Iowa's Farm Families

The Iowa State Fair, Tractor Supply Co. and WHO News Radio 1040 are searching for six farm families to recognize with the Way We Live Award at the 2014 Fair, August 7-17. These families must exemplify farm values derived from hard work and a love for the occupation of farming. To enter, submit an entry form along with a 500-1500 word essay describing how living on a farm and choosing the occupation of farming has shaped the family's life.

Emily Hohn of Belle Plaine named to Drake University Dean's List

Emily Hohn of Belle Plaine was named to the Drake University Dean's List for the Fall 2013 semester. Students must achieve a grade-point average of 3.5 or above to earn this honor. Drake is a private, independent university in Des Moines, Iowa, with an enrollment of approximately 3,400 full-time undergraduate students and 1,900 graduate students from 49 states and 50 countries.

Kenzie Woltemath named to Concordia Honor List

Concordia University, Nebraska named 245 students to its honors list for the fall 2013 semester. The top 25 percent of undergraduate students who complete at least 12 credit hours qualify for the honors list. The list of students includes sophomore Kenzie Woltemath of Atkins.

AmeriCorps NCCC-FEMA Corps Teams Return To Missouri

By Jeffrey Beyerl After returning from winter break Spruce 4 along with fellow FEMA Corps team Pine 1 returned to Springfield to resume their service work at the Disaster Field Office as a result of severe storms, straight line winds and flooding in Missouri. Before winter break Spruce 4 was stationed in Springfield working in the area of public assistance where they assisted with damage assessment and creation of project worksheets (PWs).

Benton County Youth, Auld, Wins Five National Livestock Awards

2013 International Lama Registry Show Division Points Finalized A Benton County, Iowa teenager and senior at Benton Community High School, Aspen Auld, earned not just one, but five, national livestock championships from the International Lama Registry's Show Division (ILR-SD) for 2013.  During the 2013 llama show season, which generally runs from March through November, Aspen Auld and her Aspen Rayne Ranch herd of llamas attended 13 shows in 9 different states covering nearly 8,000 miles competing in halter conformation and performance classes.

Former Viking Marshall Mullenix earns Acadamic & All-Conference honors

Marshall Mullenix, a former Vinton-Shellsburg student-athlete, has earned two academic honors at Iowa Wesleyan College. Mullenix was among the IWC athletes who earned all Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) All-Academic recognition. He also made the Fall Semester Dean's List at IWC. Mullenix graduated from Vinton-Shellsburg High School in 2013.
